At the State of the Union Address last night Michelle Obama stepped out looking amazing in a tweed skirt suit from Michael Kors’ fall 2013 ready-to-wear collection. It’s nice to see the First Lady avoid over-exuberance. It’s something we should all applaud. The point isn’t to point out her frugality. Here, we want to breakdown why this skirt suit worked well on her body shape.
Ms. Obama isn’t your typical pear shape. Her strong shoulders are uncharacteristic of a Pear making the large turndown collar a great choice. It brings better balance to her fuller bottom and softens her strong shoulders. It’s no wonder that she chose this skirt suit over her usual flared (a-line) or sleeveless dress.
A frequent misstep people make when choosing an outfit is situational appropriate. Congress is no place for formal gowns or sexy garbs, to name a few. Bringing an outfit from good to OMG requires appropriateness for the occasion. This is a great example.
As a rule, wider hips and butt balance well with taller, squarer shoulders. Broadening your shoulders as a Pear Shape does one important thing: it increases the size of your bust and upper body bringing better balance to your top and lower halves.
